Shane Dawson Got Me Back to YouTube!

I've been surfing the Net recently and stumbled upon this great channel in YouTube by a guy named Shane Dawson. He's pretty popular now in YouTube and got around a million subscribers to date. This was one of the first videos I've seen and it was totally hilarious! I have to admit I almost forgot that I have a YouTube account but after watching his hilarious videos it suddenly made me think about posting videos in my account again. Hope to do that soon!

By the way, you guys may be wondering why I watch these kinds of videos (those who know me may be raising their eyebrows right now!) but I guess I just want to be entertained. Also, if you get to know the guy making these videos you will find that he can be serious too.

What I also like about his channel is that he makes serious topics entertaining (or perhaps deliver serious messages in a way that is hilarious and disgusting at the same time). Check this out!

Omarotti Recommends: "SHERLOCK HOLMES" and "ZOMBIELAND"

It's been a while since I've written a movie review but hopefully I get to have the momentum to do so after watching pretty good movies lately ("AVATAR" so far holds my fascination at the moment). So may I now share with you my views on two movies which opened this week:

A NEW TAKE ON THE CLASSIC SLEUTH

I have always enjoyed Robert Downey Jr.'s performance in his movies lately (who would forget his Oscar-nominated portrayal in TROPIC THUNDER and his take on the IRON MAN suit). His latest movie is no exception. He has given the character of Sherlock Holmes a new life and dimension that is not only entertaining but highly believable as well.

After finally catching serial killer and occult "sorcerer" Lord Blackwood, (marvelously portrayed by Mark Strong), legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes (Downey) and his assistant Dr. Watson (portrayed perfectly by Jude Law) can close yet another successful case. But when Blackwood mysteriously returns from the grave and resumes his killing spree, Holmes must take up the hunt once again. Contending with his partner's new fiancée and the dimwitted head of Scotland Yard, the dauntless detective must unravel the clues that will lead him into a twisted web of murder, deceit, and black magic - and the deadly embrace of temptress Irene Adler (played by Rachel McAdams). While the movie received mixed reviews primarily due to its unconventional take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous character and the direction of Guy Ritchie (which happens to be Madonna's hubby), I personally enjoyed the movie for introducing (or reintroducing for fans of the original novels) the character of Sherlock Holmes. I cannot help but compare this movie to BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT where director Christopher Nolan successfully reimagined Batman. It made Sherlock Holmes more dynamic and real.

I've heard that they are planning a sequel to this movie. And I've also heard that Brad Pitt is being considered as the next villain in the movie.

ZOMBIES, ZOMBIES EVERYWHERE!

In ZOMBIELAND, Woody Harrelson ("Natural Born Killers," "2012"), Jesse Eisenberg, ("Adventureland"), Emma Stone ("The House Bunny") and Abigail Breslin ("Little Miss Sunshine") star as survivors of a zombie apocalypse. Together they take an extended road trip in an attempt to find a sanctuary free from zombies, following a set of "rules" designed to keep them alive where others have failed, all the while trying to "enjoy the little things" and killing zombies in a variety of creative ways.

This movie is totally enjoyable! Watching this movie is like playing "Resident Evil" or "Parasite Eve" in a giant screen. While there are some gory scenes, there are unexpected hilarious moments in the film which unfortunately I cannot disclose unless you want to me to spoil it for you (check out Wikipedia if you decide you want to know about it).

The producers and writers of the movie plan to make a sequel (probably a series) on the movie. They say that they still got some fresh ideas in their minds.

Both movies debut at Number 1 at the U.S. box office. Both movies, if I may say, are definitely a treat to watch! Go watch them guys! Enjoy!

Second Parent

Earlier this morning, I attended the christening of my new inaanak, Erik Ferdinand (fondly called Macky by his parents Dette and Eric) at the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Makati. It was my first time to visit the church and I was surprised because I never imagined how beautiful the church was.

As the priest began the ceremony, he shared to us that coincidentally the Gospel today (Luke 3:15-16.21-22) speaks about the baptism of Jesus Christ. He also explained each and every part of the ceremony as symbols commemorating our commitment to accept God and to reject everything that is evil.

More importantly, the priest explained the significant role of godparents in the life of the child. He even went further by asking all the godparents: "If the child goes to Hell, who are we going to blame?" It was supposed to be a rhetorical question but the underlying idea behind the question completely summarizes how important our roles as godparents are. We must become role models, the priest said, and we must guide the child to live like how God wanted us to live -- free from sin and to live in the presence of His light.

To Dette ad Eric, thank you for making me a significant part of Baby Macky's life. And to Macky (I hope sooner or later you will be able to read this!) I hope you will grow up strong in faith and with deep respect both to your parents and to your godparents (that includes me!) On my part, I will do my best to be a role model for you. Just like what the priest said, being a godparent is not only a commitment to the baptized child but to God as well.

On Movie Award Criterias

Me and my mom watched "Mano Po 6: A Mother's Love" earlier. Mother Lily was right: the criteria of the MMFF in choosing the Best Picture was totally absurd. Ticket sales should never be a reason for judging the quality of a movie. The organizers should have realized that good movies seldom do get appreciated by moviegoers. No wonder the MMFF has lost its credibility.

But then again, movie producers should also be aware that people do get tired of the usual melodramatic themes in movies and are now looking forward to seeing more visually-stimulating masterpieces. But I would also like to ask the movie producers not to underestimate Filipino moviegoers. They should at least recognize that they cannot keep on feeding us with so much visuals with no sense at all. Producers should not undermine the importance of a good story. After all, moviegoers would not shell out their hard-earned money and troop to the cinemas only to feel shortchanged by movies which only has good visuals but with mediocre or crappy screenplay.

Bar Tips

In a week’s time, around 6,000 examinees will again troop De La Salle University in Taft Avenue to test their mettle and eventually hurdle what most people describe as the toughest exam in the country—the Bar Examinations.

I can still recall how I felt the anxiety building up on me while I was preparing for the said exam last year. Having experienced it myself (and hurdling it!) all I can say is that the Bar Examinations is everything an ideal exam is supposed to be—a test not only of the intellectual kind, but also of the physical and emotional.

While I reserve the right of providing bar tips to the “esteemed” bar reviewers (believe me, some of them don’t understand what they are talking about, so be discerning), I would just like to share some practical pointers about the exam and my parting words for the future lawyers of our land. (For these pointers, I wish to express my gratitude to my lawyer-friend Atty. Angelo and to my review buddy Atty. Perry who shared with me their views and opinion during my bar review.)

Don’t Take the Bar Exams For Granted

I suppose you already know this one, but it is still best to remind everyone about the nature of the Bar Exams. Passing and failing the exams would define your future (whether immediate or otherwise). It is also the culminating event in your four-year stint in law school as a student. It is also the only way for one to become what you have been preparing for the last four years—to be a lawyer.

You may be wondering—why the need to remind us about the importance of the Bar Exams? Here’s why: some of the bar examinees have the belief that they can pass the exam without really doing their best. I’m sure you have heard about this during law school—barristers who tend to be lax in their bar review passed the exam while those who have devoted their entire six months after graduation in reviewing did not make it.

While passing or failing the exam may be a result of various factors (luck included) let me remind you that that there is nothing to lose when one diligently prepares for the Bar Exams. At least the only regret one could say when one fails is that his preparation was not enough. All he has to do next time is to add up to what he already knows. Just think about the situation when one did not prepare for the Bar Exams. If he passes, well and good; if he does not, he only has himself and his enormous ego to blame.

Read Everything That Needs To Be Read

Don’t just try to read everything, do everything to be able to read everything.

Sounds impossible? Well, yes it is. But looking back I thought that this was one of the best pointer I received during my bar review.

Knowing that one has read everything that needs to be read makes one confident that no matter what question the examiner may throw at him, he can pick out an idea and provide a reasonable answer to such question.

One may argue that every Bar Exam should be taken as is, meaning the existence of “crazy” questions in the exams depends on the choice of the Bar Chairman. While I agree with such point, still there is no reason not to anticipate such questions in the first place. Besides, as I have said earlier, there is nothing to lose when one properly prepares for the exam.

Don’t Just Read Anything

This pointer should go hand in hand with the previous one. While I encourage bar examinees to read everything that needs to be read, one should still be discerning enough to concentrate on materials that require your entire time and devotion. As much as possible, stick to materials you are familiar with and concentrate on them. By doing so, you prevent yourself from being confused with all the materials around you and makes you in control of your time.

Slay the “First Sunday Monster”

Anxiety before the bar exams is absolutely normal. One’s anxiety, however, goes to its most critical level as the first Sunday of the exam approaches.

So how does one get over what I call the “First Sunday Monster?” The only way to manage such anxiety is to prepare oneself for the exam—physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. Knowing that the bar examinee has thoroughly prepared to take the exam builds up his confidence and eventually lessens his anxiety.

What is not normal though is to doubt yourself that you cannot pass the bar exams. Every barrister can pass the bar exams. It only depends on how one prepared himself to become a lawyer.

Avoid Negative Vibes

This pointer may sound absurd to some of you, but even if it’s not during the Bar Exams one should consider doing this tip anyway.

Remember how we were told not to approach babies when we feel tired, sick or frustrated because it will make them feel the same way too? Well, that principle may hold true even to adults. Negative energy is contagious like a disease—it spreads like wildfire and wreaks havoc to anyone afflicted with it.

So how does this relate to the Bar Exams? Just think about this: would you, the bar examinee, allow yourself to be afflicted with negative vibes as you take the Bar Exams and allow such negativity to affect the result of your exam? I would assume your answer would be a big definite NO.

Think positively. Never doubt about your capacity to endure a whole month of gruelling tests. Never consider yourself unworthy to become a lawyer someday. You have come this far in your quest to become a lawyer—there is no going back.

Pray

Lastly and most important of all, never think that passing the Bar Exams all depends on you, and YOU alone. There is still someone who would eventually decide your fate—GOD.

The least that one could do before taking the Bar Exams is to offer it to Him, and allow His wisdom to guide you through the questions posed before you. Ask for His guidance and strength as you prepare and eventually thread through a whole month of gruelling exams. Lastly, offer Him your gratitude for the graces and blessings He has showered on you while preparing for the Exams, and for all the graces and blessing yet to come.

Omarotti Reviews: “MAMMA MIA!”

It has been a while since I’ve seen a movie in a THX cinema. Looking at the list of movies shown in theatres this week, I kept wondering what movie will be shown in one of my favourite theatres—TriNoma Cinema 7. WANTED has already been shown in it, so was HANCOCK, and most recently JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. I thought it will stop there, until I looked again—they’re now playing “MAMMA MIA!”

That comes not as a surprise to me. I see it proper that the film version of the successful musical featuring songs from 70’s band ABBA be shown in a THX cinema so that the audiences will appreciate the music better. They’ve done the same a couple of times already—I’ve seen HORTON HEARS A WHO in it, and even STEP UP 2: THE STREETS was likewise shown in the same theatre. In HORTON, sound was very crucial because in a key scene the miniscule residents of Whoville (led by its Mayor portrayed by comic Steve Carrell) have to make themselves known to the rest of the world by making a lot of noise so that they can be heard. As for STEP UP 2, the movie is all about dancing and music—enough said.

Now comes “MAMMA MIA!” While I admit the film did not really meet some of my expectations, it is still worth watching because of its sheer fun. And if you are a big ABBA fan, you will surely enjoy the movie and could almost exclaim in the end: “Thank You For the Music.”

There is nothing really remarkable about the simple storyline of the movie: Raised on a Greek island by a formerly rebellious mom (Meryl Streep) who never disclosed the identity of her father, a bride-to-be (Amanda Seyfried) locates three men—Harry, Bill and Sam (portrayed by Stellan Skarsgard, Colin Firth, and Pierce Brosnan respectively) who might be her father and invites them to her wedding.

While the story may be simple, what makes “MAMMA MIA!” stand out was its ability to weave the music of ABBA into the storyline. I would have to admit—I am only familiar with at least three ABBA songs: “Dancing Queen,” “The Winner Takes It All,” and “Chiquitita.” But the wonderful thing about the movie is that they sang these songs in the movie—and you have to see how they did it!

Another thing worth watching in this film is the fact that Meryl Streep did not only deliver her acting prowess, but her singing prowess as well. While her singing can not be compared with that of Barbra Streisand and Julie Andrews, her singing effort is nonetheless commendable. Seeing her combine drama and music in her acting is really extraordinary.

Not to be left out is Pierce Brosnan. Check this out: James Bond singing—and in tights! Enough said. (Watch the end credits guys to see for yourself).

Aside from the music, “MAMMA MIA!” also boasts of a wonderful supporting cast (Julie Walters, Christine Baranski, Dominic Cooper) and beautiful scenery (the movie was shot in Greece). It is quite disappointing, though, that the movie reduced the location to a mere backdrop for all the singing, dancing and drama and was not able to give it more importance in developing the movie’s plot.

In sum, “MAMMA MIA!” is worth watching if you need to be infected by the fun and enjoyment the characters in the film are having. But unless you are familiar with the songs (or was a big ABBA fan), appreciating this movie may take quite a while.

Omarotti Recommends: "WANTED"

I would have to admit—I seldom believe my friends when they recommend movies to watch in the cinemas, especially those who simply tell me “Maganda yung pelikula.” That phrase often means the opposite—the movie ends up being just another watchable movie not really worth your time and precious money. For that reason, I usually utilize my own instincts and knowledge to determine what movie to watch.

Unfortunately last week I failed to do my research and ended up heeding my fellow lawyer-friend’s advice to watch WANTED. At first I though—not again, buster! This friend of mine was the one who told me to watch 10,000 B.C. which I find to be totally out of sync with reality. Mammoths in the middle of the desert? People who look more developed as homo sapiens than real cave men who should look more ape-like than human (blue eyes, buffed body)? Oh, come on! This guy also told me not to watch Iron Man. I still watched it though and I loved it (Robert Downey Jr. was perfect as the billionaire Tony Stark)! But as I have said earlier, I still heeded his advice.

Why? Well, curiosity struck me. And for the first time, that lawyer-friend of mine was right! “WANTED” was awesome!

As summarized by Yahoo! Movies, 25-year-old Wesley Gibson (the very talented James McAvoy, who was last seen in Atonement) was the most disaffected, cube-dwelling drone the planet had ever known. His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend ignored him routinely and his life plodded on interminably. Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock-punching rut. Until he met a woman named Fox (the ultra-sexy and soon-to-be mother of twins Angelina Jolie). After his estranged father is murdered, the deadly sexy Fox recruits Wes into the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Wes to avenge his dad's death by unlocking his dormant powers. As she teaches him how to develop lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, Wes discovers this team lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: carry out the death orders given by fate itself. With wickedly brilliant tutors—including the Fraternity's enigmatic leader, Sloan (the ever enigmatic and brilliant Morgan Freeman, who reprises his role as Lucius Fox in Chris Nolan’s Batman sequel The Dark Knight)—Wes grows to enjoy all the strength he ever wanted. But, slowly, he begins to realize there is more to his dangerous associates than meets the eye. And as he wavers between newfound heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one could ever teach him: he alone controls his destiny.

It was only after watching the movie that I was able to get to learn more about it. I found out that it was actually the first English-language film of visionary director Timur Bekmambetov (cool name!) whose previous movies Day Watch and Night Watch was reported to have surpassed the record of the Lord of the Rings films in gross ticket sales in Russia. Although I haven’t seen any of them, I learned that both films have this certain “distorted reality” look, where ordinary people would perform certain extraordinary things (you can even them outrageous). After watching “WANTED,” true enough, the “distorted reality” look was there.

Of course, a film with Angelina Jolie in it is definitely worth watching. But more than being mesmerized by her mere presence in the movie, watching her do some bad-ass action sequences would definitely make one’s blood rush.

Another thing about “WANTED” is that it introduced something new in terms of visual effects. While we are all familiar with “bullet time” (courtesy of The Matrix) the movie improved on the same by “curving them.” Just watch the movie guys to find out what I mean.

“WANTED” is the perfect movie to watch if you are looking for some sort of release for your pent-up frustrations. It’s bloody, it’s sexy, and awkwardly enjoyable.

Expanding Your Peso

With the rising prices of various commodities nowadays (I suppose I need not mention them anymore because we all know what they are, right?) people are now setting their eyes on ways to expand the value of their well-earned peso. The way I see it, without our present crisis these measures may be branded by some as being kuripot or barat, but I believe even during normal days one should at least consider these measures for his own sake. Who in his normal mentality doesn’t want to earn more, anyway?

If there is one thing positive that this crisis did to us, I think it blurred the distinction between the so-called may-kaya and the maralita. Everyone has already felt the crunch and the need to tighten their belts. Every one of us now belongs in just one class—naghihirap.

To those who seem to ignore the crisis, I hope the crisis hit them, and may it hit them HARD!

So, as my way of feeling for the plight of fellow Filipinos in dealing with our present crisis, I wish to share some money-saving tips that hopefully would be of help to us all.

Take Public Transport

Today’s banner picture of the Philippine Daily Inquirer says it all—passengers of the MRT and LRT has reached critical levels. Suprising? Somehow I knew this would be happening sooner or later.

I once remarked to a fellow lawyer that the most practical person nowadays is one who has memorized all the routes of jeepeneys and buses, and one who can get to his desired destination in the least expensive way. How I wish I can be that practical person (well, at least in the memorizing part)!

If you remain to be apprehensive to take public transport because you may be viewed as walang pera or mahirap, I suggest you rethink such position as soon as possible. Public transport is the cheapest way to get to your destination. While I understand some concerns about public transport like security and safety, I say no one is secure or safe in his own vehicle either. After all, we are all the same—naghihirap.

Bath Time!

Something incredible happened last night. As I have been doing lately, I usually liten to late-night program on FM radio, particularly Boys Night Out on Magic 89.9 (Mondays to Thursdays, 9 pm to 12 midnight) and Stopover with DJ Patti on Jam 88.3 (Mondays to Fridays, 9 pm to 12 midnight). I often switch between these stations but I’m currently being hooked on Jam 88.3 because of their wonderful playlist (sorry boys!). And as what I have been doing while listening to these programs, I send tem my views and opinions regarding their topics for the show.

What was incredible about last night is that they both have the same topic—tips in save money. So I sent my tip—a single tip—to both shows, and they BOTH read my tip on air! How’s that for a tip!

What was the tip I sent them? You may be surprised by its simplicity.

It was actually not my tip. I got that tip when we bought this bar of soap from a herbal store somewhere in Quezon City. The soap—it is made from guava leaves and pulp, which is good for the skin—was a bit expensive, and because it is natural it easily dissolves in water. When I bought another bar for my mom after I’ve used mine, I told the saleslady about how the soap easily dissolves in water. Then she told me: they often tell their clients to cut the soap into quarters and to use each quarter one at a time. She explained that by using only each quarter at a time, you end up having four bars of the same kind of soap. Ever since she made that tip, we’ve been doing the same at home, and it works! Now we don’t have to buy that expensive (but effective) soap often.

Do the Walk

Scientific studies have already proven that walking is one of the safest exercises one can do. It is also the easiest for of exercise (one can do it without noticing that they are already burning calories by doing so).

This tip should be taken together with my first tip. If you still have that bias over taking public transport then you might want to consider this. It would not only be good for your money but good for your body too!

No Need To Make SMS Free, Just Make It Unlimited For All Networks

There are persistent news lately about the government’s move to make short messaging services (SMS) provided by telecom companies here in the Philippines free of charge. This move was obviously intended to be a form of relief for the ordinary Filipinos who are presently having difficulties coping with increasing oil prices as well as other domestic problems.

Some sectors have expressed their approval over the proposal, saying that it is about time the government step up to at least control what they call as the “telco cartel.” Others, on the other hand, have expressed the contrary. According to a congressman and former chair of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), making SMS free would eventually cause the congestion of network traffic and would in turn become a disservice to the million of telecom subscribers in the country. He even added that he is not aware of any country in the world which provides free SMS service.

While I commend the government for bringing up this proposal, I just wish to share my thoughts.

If you would think about it, the telecom companies in the country are already providing free SMS services through their unlimited text offers. Thus, the contention of the telecom companies as to the congestion of their networks is somewhat dubious.

I think what the government can do at the moment is to examine the unlimited text promos of these telecom companies and consider making them unlimited for all networks. The way I see it, it would serve the government’s intention of bringing relief to the people and is also a more subtle way of making the telecom companies consider providing the service for free in the future.

I have no doubt that the NTC may consider such a proposal. As to how and when this proposal may be effected, however, the same is still at the telecom companies’ discretion. I just hope that they are willing to give us all even a slight sigh of relief.

Super Busy

As you guys may have noticed, Omarotti's Logbook now sports a somewhat different look. Well, I actually tried to close down the blog, but thinking twice about my posts I tried to save it. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to save some of the fancy formatting, which explains the new template. Hopefully I can still make do with this present template.

I've been very busy lately (which explains the long-delayed posts) and I was totally preoccupied with personal stuff which is part of the so-called "new chapter" in my so-called real life. Not to mention that my personal computer broke down and didn't have internet connection for a time now. But hopefully I can again get back to my usual stuff.

Results of 2007 Bar Exams Known Tomorrow

The results of the 2007 Bar Examinations will be released tomorrow, March 29, 2008.

“We expect the results to be released tomorrow after lunch,” Assistant Court Administrator Jose Midas P. Marquez, Chief of the Supreme Court Public Information Office and Chief of Staff of the Office of the Chief Justice, told the members of the press in a media briefing following a meeting with Justice Adolfo S. Azcuna, Chairperson of the 2007 Committee on Bar Examinations.

“Prior to the release, we really want to check and double-check (the matching of the examinees’ number with the corresponding names of examinees), Atty. Marquez added.

The decoding process has already started after the Supreme Court En Banc session that took place this morning.

As early as yesterday, Justice Azcuna has said the Bar exams results can be viewed simultaneously at www.supremecourt.gov.ph, the official website of the High Court. The list of the names will be displayed in LCD projectors to be strategically displayed at the Supreme Court front yard near its Padre Faura entrance, Justice Azcuna added.

Figures from the Office of the Bar Confidant headed by Deputy Clerk of Court and Bar Confidant Atty. Ma. Cristina B. Layusa showed a total of 5,626 law graduates from 109 law schools nationwide took and finished the exams held on September 2, 9, 16, and 23, 2007 at the De La Salle University in Taft Avenue, Manila.

A total of 5,804 law graduates have filed their petitions to take the 2007 Bar exams; 5,799 were admitted.

The Rules of Court provide that “a candidate may be deemed to have passed his examination successfully if he has obtained a general average of 75% in all subjects without falling below 50% in any subject.” In determining the average, subjects in the examinations are given the following relative weights: Political and International Law, 15%; Labor and Social Legislation, 10%; Civil Law, 15%; Taxation, 10%; Mercantile Law, 15%; Criminal Law, 10%; Remedial Law, 20%; and Legal Ethics and Practical Exercises, 5%, for a total of 100%.

It's Official: SC to Release Bar Exam Results on March 28, 2008

MANILA, Philippines - The Supreme Court (SC) will release on Friday the results of last year's Bar examinations held at the De La Salle University in Manila last September.

Supreme Court spokesman Jose Midas Marquez told GMANEWs.TV that the list would come out early in the evening of Friday - if not late in the afternoon - after an en banc session of the justices.

During the said session, the Bar chairman will present the results as well as the statistics for the September examination, pending the release approval from the other justices.

Only then will the examination booklets be matched to their respective owners, eventually coming up with the final list of Bar passers.

During the en banc session, the justices will also decide on whether to approve April 28 as the date for the oath-taking ceremony, Marquez added.

The list of Bar passers will be projected on three wide screens at the Supreme Court compound with the names of the passers scrolled in alphabetical order.

Marquez said the list of the Bar passers would likewise be posted immediately on their official website.

"We will upload the list about 10 to 15 minutes after the results are revealed at the SC. And we expect heavy traffic that's why we would be putting up mirror sites to accommodate the flow of visitors," Marquez said.

Later in the day, the Supreme Court will post on its website a media advisory, giving instructions on how to obtain a soft copy of the list for posting on online news websites.

Also in the afternoon, the high court will be coming up with a summary list of the passing percentage in the Bar examinations over the years beginning 2000 for public reference.

Another diversion!

It is confimed: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will be shown in the Philippines! I've seen the trailer when we watched 10,000 B.C. at Ayala TriNoma last week and once again I became very excited about the movie. Hopefully the playdate here in the Philippines will be simultaneous with that in the U.S. (that's May 22).

Also, after checking out the official website, I found out that they finally released the official poster for the movie. Here it is guys, for your viewing pleasure!

My All-Time Favorite Movies

Hello guys! I just needed the diversion to keep my sanity during these very uncertain times.

A few months back my college friend posted a comment in one of my posts asking me for my all-time favorite movies. I admitted in my reply that twenty would not be enough to list down my favorite movies. Luckily, I found this widget through Friendster which made the job easier.

The following movies were selected not necessarily because they were superb in craftsmanship or have won various awards. Some of these films were chosen according to their entertainment value (or in other words, I simply enjoyed them!) So ladies and gentlemen, here are my all-time favorite movies. Having My Fifteen Minutes of Fame: My Stint in “1 vs. 100”

It is now exactly one week since the episode of ABS-CBN’s game show 1 vs. 100 which included us as one of the members of the “Mob” was aired. But even up to this time, I still cannot get over the feeling of being part of one of the country’s top-rating game shows. At first I thought it was all pure luck but later on I realized that maybe it was really God’s will that I become part of the show.

How I Became Part of the Mob

My stint in 1 vs. 100 was really brought about by sheer boredom. After taking my qualifying exams, I started texting 1 vs. 100, hoping that I will be seen on television and win big bucks. I also thought of joining game shows because one of my classmates in law school joined Pilipinas Game KNB? and won. So I thought: “If she did it, why can’t I?”

A month after I texted my entry I got a phone call from the 1 vs. 100 staff telling me that my number was randomly selected to become one of the members of the “Mob.” Of course, my initial reaction was excitement. The staff then told me to go to ABS-CBN for the screening and to bring two identification cards and a pen.

Before the screening, we were asked to fill up the Personal Information Sheets and a waiver (I am not in the position to discuss the contents of the waiver, but I can tell you in case you want to join the game show one has to read them very carefully). After handing out the Personal Information Sheets and the waiver to the 1 vs. 100 staff, we were then given a set of questionnaires to answer. Based on the results, the staff will choose who will become members of the “Mob.” After the questionnaires were collated and checked, the staff one by one announced the names of those who passed. You know what happened next. I passed.

After our names were called we had our picture and fingerprints digitally taken (we no longer need to show any identification when we go for the taping, the staff told us). Then we were told to wait for the any of the staff to call us for the taping proper (in my case, it was a text message informing me that my taping is scheduled last January 21 at around 3 pm).

The Taping Proper

The taping date arrived. Before the taping, we were each given our respective numbers, which also serves as our seating arrangement. Afterwards, we were led to the set of 1 vs. 100 so that we may properly be seated.

The first thing I noticed about the set was that it actually does not look as big as it appears on television. After we were seated, we tested the buttons used in the game by actually playing with a supposed real “The One” (the mock game’s host was the director of 1 vs. 100; “The One” was named Dumbo, their spinner).

After psyching us up for the game, the show’s host, Mr. Edu Manzano, arrived. After a quick discussion with the staff and the members of the “Mob,” the game started taping.

It was only then when the cameras began rolling when Chairman Edu announced “The One.” Everyone was astounded when we saw who she was—it was the lovely Valerie Concepcion.

As the game progresses, I began to worry how will I be seen on television, considering my seat location (I was located at the farthest seat in the left). I also noticed that the moving cameras were located on the other side of the set. “Oh well,” I thought, “I guess there is no chance for me of getting seen on television after all.”

But something struck my attention. As we were being told by the crew to scream “Use your help!” towards “The One,” I noticed the 3-time and 2-time Unbeatables seated at the topmost portion of the set standing up, raising their hands, and shouting at the top of their lungs. So I followed suit. I raised my hands, stood up, and screamed at the top of my lungs. Apparently, it worked (those who watched the episode may note that I was shown on television three times). Or it may also be because I was the only one left in my row which was not eliminated (I was eliminated in the last question which eliminate the two remaining “Ten Picks”).

The taping began at around 5 in the afternoon, and ended up at around 10 in the evening (we learned, however, that we were the first batch of contestants for the day, and that there is another batch which will be taping after us). After getting our fill of sumptuous free food from their sponsors (we ate Ysabella’s Chicken from Bacolod Chicken Inasal, Hapi Haus donuts, Mr. Softee ice cream, and Zagu) I rushed home because I still have to go to UST the following morning (more on this matter in my next post).

Making Friends

One good thing about joining game shows is that you get to know a lot of people. And even if one does not win, at least there is a chance for you to gain a lot of friends in the process.

When I first went for the screening, I honestly do not know anyone among the hundreds of fellow contestants. But as the taping progresses, some of my fellow contestants opened up and shared their own experiences with me. I got the opportunity to bond with my fellow contestants, and it actually felt good, knowing that they too share with your excitement and anxiety. For that alone, I thought, my whole stint in 1 vs. 100 was an experience I will forever remember.

To the wonderful people whom I got acquainted with and who shared their memorable experiences with me (Earl, Ice, Nanay Flor, Ate Beng, Ate Mayeth, Ate Josie, Ferdz, Bryan, Carlo, and Ate Glee), I wish you all good luck in all your future endeavors and thank you for letting me become a part of your lives. Hope to see you soon (in another game show, perhaps?)!

Also, I wish to congratulate the staff and crew of 1 vs. 100 for a terrific show last Saturday and for taking care of us in the process. More power to you guys and keep up the good work!

Movies To Watch For This 2008

Happy New Year!

I know this may be a very late greeting but I hope you guys would bear with me. I was actually figuring out how I will start blogging in this brand new year (or to be more precise, what my first post for this year will be). But as time went by I realized I need to post something (well, at least something sensible) just to keep my thoughts coming. So, here we go!

You may have noticed how this author loves to watch movies. He even admitted in his profile that he is a movie addict. So I am sharing with you guys the two Hollywood movies I am eagerly anticipating this year.

The Man With The Whip and Hat Is Back!

Finally, after almost a decade, Indiana Jones is back for another swashbuckling adventure. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull brings back director Steven Spielberg and its star Harrison Ford, together with new cast members including Beowulf star Ray Winstone, Transformers’ Shia La Beouf and the lovely Cate Blanchett, among others.

The official website (http://www.indianajones.com) is filled with pictures and behind-the-scene footages of their shoot. But most intriguing for us is the fact that there appears to be no picture or footage (in character or otherwise) of Cate Blanchett, although she has been officially announced as part of the movie. Our guess is that she may be playing a key role in the movie (the villainess, perhaps) and the studio people (producer George Lucas, in particular) would rather keep her character on the wraps until the movie officially begins its run sometime in May. That should not be surprising since the movie has Star Wars almost written all over it (FYI, Star Wars perhaps is one of the most secretive movies ever made, with every cast and crew signing a confidentiality contract prohibiting them from squealing or leaking production information to the public until the movie shoot is through).

Well, whatever role Cate Blanchett will be playing would surely be another superb performance from the very talented actress, whose portrayal in her other movies (she played Bob Dylan in I’m Not There, the Virgin Queen in Elizabeth, Galadriel in Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, and the shooting victim in Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu’s Babel) has always been remarkable.

The movie is slated to be shown in U.S. theaters on May 22 (I hope that would be the same date this movie will be shown in the Philippines). And since this would be the sequel to Indiana Jones after 18 years, I would bet that one of the theaters in the Philippines would hold a midnight screening when the movie gets in our shores (Ayala Malls have pioneered this gimmick, beginning with Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace).

Just to add: the Collector’s Edition DVD of Indiana Jones in the Philippines is currently selling like pancakes. As of yesterday, we checked with our favorite video store and asked if they still have copies of the same. Most of them only have a single copy remaining on their stock (the four-disc boxed set includes the three original movies–Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, The Last Crusade and a bonus disc containing features) and the same is sold for HALF its original price. My personal tip: go to the least known branches of your favorite video and music stores–they still might have some copies stored in their stock. Good luck!

It’s Joke Time!

When I first heard that director Christopher Nolan was tapped to bring back the Caped Crusader into the big screen after the very disappointing Batman and Robin, I knew the whole treatment to the franchise would drastically be changed. Of course, there is no need to introduce Batman to every one (who does not know him, anyway?) but reintroducing him is another thing. In that aspect, I believe, the producers of Batman Begins succeeded.

Batman Begins appealed to me because it made the Caped Crusader (played brilliantly by Christian Bale, who this author has first seen in Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun) human again, which the previous movies (okay, the movies directed by Joel Schumacher, in particular) almost totally obliterated. After all, his being human makes Batman unique among other superheroes.

At the end of Batman Begins, we are given a glimpse as to his next nemesis. “Could it really be Joker?” I asked.

Definitely.

Of course, when The Dark Knight was first announced, there are questions as to how Heath Ledger would compare to Jack Nicholson’s Joker. The way I see it, the performance of the two wonderful actors cannot exactly be compared with each other. Jack Nicholson’s Joker will always remain as such, but Ledger’s portrayal of Batman’s nemesis is darker and more psychotic.

The movie is slated to be shown in U.S. theaters in June or July. The cast still includes Sir Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman. Visit http://thedarkknight.warnerbros.com to see the official trailer (this one's AWESOME!).

Just to add: In the Philippines, if you want to catch the first six minutes of The Dark Knight, watch I Am Legend at the IMAX Theater at the SM Mall of Asia. They will play it before the movie starts, so be on your seat before the screening time to catch it. By the way, I Am Legend is not shown in 3D in IMAX. So for those of you who may be asking “What is so IMAX-y with I Am Legend?” the preview alone is the reason. But if you ask me, I would have watched I Am Legend in THX. The movie contained quiet scenes, which makes THX perfect for such scenes. (When we watched it in IMAX, I can’t help but notice the sound of the projector at the back of the screen when such quiet scenes were being played.)

As this year comes to an end, it is but proper to thank those who have made my year memorable and remarkable. It goes without saying that without them, my life would definitely be different. So as a tribute to them, I am posting this in recognition of their invaluable contribution in shaping and making my year the way it was.

My Simple Holiday Wish List

Christmas is just around the corner (six more days, to be exact), and like most people, I can almost feel it. Days and nights have already turned colder nowadays, which makes a very good excuse for staying in bed longer than usual. Lights and decorations also adorn houses, although some households prefer to do this at a minimum, perhaps to lessen their holiday electric consumption (which I find proper, ever since news about electricity rate hike starting next year circulated).

And then there’s the Misa de Gallo or commonly referred to as “Simbang Gabi.” Uniquely Filipino, the 9-day dawn novena masses have become part of our traditional commemoration of the birth of our Savior. Many believe that completing the novena masses would make your wishes come true. The Church, however, is quick to advise that it is our faith which makes them come true. And as what our recently installed parish priest said in his sermon during one of the dawn masses, God would ultimately grant our wishes “in His time.”

So what am I wishing for this holiday season?

I actually have a simple wish list, and it does not have to happen during this season. Although I understand that completing the 9-day novena masses does not guarantee that they will all come true, I just hope that God will grant those which He sees as proper.

Most of the items in my wish list range from the absurd to the impossible. From the Wish Ko Lang type to the Wish-I-Am-A-Millionaire kind. So here goes, in no particular order:

1. Meet the Girl of My Dreams

Well, she does not have to appear in my dream to become my girl. All she needs to do is to accept me as I am.

2. Meet Marimar’s Marian Rivera

I am not able to catch GMA 7’s Marimar recently, but every time I do I always admire Marian Rivera’s acting, not to mention her looks. I would suppose that her acting has greatly improved since she began shooting two Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) official entries: Desperadas and Bahay Kubo, both helmed by Joel Lamangan. For this reason alone, you guys would know what movie this guy will be watching coming December 25.

A Tribute to Job Seekers

In 2002, this author submitted an essay in the annual literary contest sponsored by the official student publication of his university. The essay, written in Filipino, was awarded an Honorable Mention (Karangalang Banggit) and was even included in the compilation of winning entries in the said literary contest. The essay, titled Bentesingko, speaks about a young college graduate who always sees a 25-centavo coin on his path during the entire period of his unemployment.

In an interview, the author admitted that the essay was not entirely about his personal experiences but was based on the story of his friend, who happened to experience such “bizarre” phenomenon over and over again. Since the essay was not partly based on his experience, the author did not realize how prophetic his essay will become on his personal life.

Until yesterday.

After following up one of my job applications, I came to realize how difficult it is to be hired and to get employed. I actually thought that once a student earns his degree and becomes qualified for a job, he can automatically be hired. Oh, how stupid can I get? I failed to understand that there are actually other persons who are similarly qualified (or even highly qualified).

It is thus not surprising that job fairs are always jam-packed with job seekers and classified ads are the most-read sections in the dailies today.

I now come to share with the thousands (or should I say, millions?) of unemployed individuals in this country their agony, pain, frustration, desperation, and everything else that comes along our journey as we try to find our place in the labor sector. To all of you guys, my hats are off for you.

As a form of tribute to my unemployed (as of the moment, I hope) colleagues, and as my way of sharing a piece of my mind, I would like to share with you certain tips on job hunting:

Take Job Hunting Very Seriously

We job seekers should consider ourselves as soldiers that are being deployed into an unknown territory. Thus, one must have his complete arsenal ready when venturing into war–that is, war against unemployment.

It pays to keep our resumés ready. Updating them and checking them for typographical or factual errors every once in a while will ensure that we will not get rejected simply because we called the “Vice-President” as a mere “Manager” or we called a “Ms.” a “Mrs.”

Also, an impressive design for a resumé would sometimes spell the difference between our applications being hired or getting rejected. It helps to layout the contents of the resumé according to their significance in the job one wants to be hired. Even the paper for the resumé needs to be considered. One may choose the kind of paper which would stand out when placed in a pile of office documents, since our goal is to get our applications noticed.

Aside from the resumé, one should have his latest pictures ready. Having the original copies of our Transcript of Records and Diplomas in hand while applying for a job will also be helpful especially when employers demand photocopies to be compared with the original ones.

Time Is Of The Essence

The key word here is “promptness.”

It is advisable that once a graduate gets hold of his Transcript of Records, he should already consider sending out his applications. While it would be impressive to include your Diploma in your resumé, our Transcript of Records would suffice to prove that we graduated.

Also, we must make it a habit to come to our job interviews earlier than the assigned time. Arriving a few minutes before the interview actually gives us an opportunity to look around the place and familiarize ourselves with the surroundings, thus relieving our anxiety.

Use Your Connections

One may consider calling his or her friends, previous friends, or the friends of his or her friends to find out if they know any job vacancies or they themselves need some employees. They may also be helpful in getting recommendations and character references.

Amplify Your Selling Points

In making resumés, one may consider it as a written advertisement of one’s self. Thus, it is advisable to design it in a way that one’s qualifications are highlighted.

Keep Your Head Low

Although there is nothing wrong with amplifying one’s qualifications in his or her resumé, one must still remember that we are still at the mercy of the employers. We are not in the position to choose the work we will be assigned to perform. Remember the Beatitudes: “Happy are those who are humble; they will receive what God has promised (Matthew 5:5).

During the Waiting Period, Try Improving Your Skills

There is always a room for improvement, and the best opportunity for one to do so is when he has nothing to do. Thus, while waiting for our job applications to be considered, one may try harnessing one’s talents and skills. I, for one, find blogging as one way of improving my language and writing skills. One may also try learning other skills to add to their qualifications.

Pray

This is the most important tip I am willing to share to all of you guys. One must remember that no matter how difficult one’s situation is, God is still here to help us. And in times of desperation (perhaps just like the many of us who are currently unemployed), let His will be done and let us all believe that everything that happens to us has a purpose.

Omarotti’s Tips: Choosing the Best Cinema

This is perhaps one of the most common questions asked by my friends to me every time a new movie is scheduled to be shown in town. They would debate for hours and yet come up with no decision as to the same. So perhaps to ease out their tension and the breeding animosity among my friends (hey, I've seen my friends fight over movies and damn they are SERIOUS!), I've decided to share this piece.

To begin, I wish to stress that there is no other way to enjoy movies than in the big screen. Although most of you may disagree with me for various reasons (most would tell me they enjoy watching it in their homes because of the “Rewind” and “Subtitle” options in the DVD), may I remind you guys that movies were originally designed to be seen in the big screen. That is where movies yield their magic.

Also, I wish to stress that our goal for sharing this piece is to achieve ultimate movie satisfaction. So, we have to consider the movie being shown in order for us to determine the best cinema for watching it.

The IMAX Experience

Located at the SM Mall of Asia, the San Miguel Coca-Cola IMAX Theater is by far the most talked-about in the Philippines. I experienced it last year with my mom (we watched T-Rex: Back to the Cretaceous) and I was truly amazed at how the pictures would virtually pop out of the screen. I also remember how kids who were watching waved their hands as fishes came out of the screen when the trailer of Deep Sea 3D was shown.

Luckily for us, we were able to experience IMAX 3D once again yesterday when we watched Beowulf in its full glory. (I even saw my Taxation and Commercial Law Review professor after the screening. I guess he knows how to appreciate movies like I do).

The movie was SUPERB as it fully utilized the 3D capabilities of IMAX to create a realistic and enthralling experience! It is thus no wonder that I would recommend watching Beowulf in IMAX, and in no other theater.

It goes without saying that when a movie is shown in IMAX, an entirely entertaining and enthralling experience awaits you.

The only downside in watching movies in IMAX is the cost. Depending on the movie, the cost would normally range from 250 to 400 pesos. Also, one has to actually troop to the SM Mall of Asia in order to watch a movie there, since it is the only one in the Philippines. But if you are anticipating a good movie and would love to see it in 3D, it is all worth the trip.

What if you are anticipating a very good movie but the movie is not being shown in IMAX, what’s the next best cinema to watch it?

Here’s the answer.

The Audience is Listening: Lucasfilm THX Certified Cinemas

People would normally ask me about the difference between an ordinary cinema and a THX-certified cinema. More experienced moviegoers, on the other hand, would ask me the difference between a Dolby Digital/DTS/SDDS Cinema and a THX-certified cinema.

The difference lies in the theater itself. While Dolby Digital, Digital Theatrical Sound (DTS) and Sony Dynamic Digital Sound (SDDS) pertain to sound systems, Lucasfilm THX pertains to the construction or layout of the theater itself. It has to do with the acoustics of the entire auditorium. Usually, a THX-certified cinema carries with it a Dolby Digital/DTS/SDDS sound system. What a THX cinema does is to enhance such digital sound through the proper placement of the speakers to achieve the ultimate surround effect. Thus, when you enter a THX-certified cinema, you can actually hear the voice from behind even if you are seated near the screen.

A THX-certified cinema is the next best cinema after IMAX. This theater is best especially when watching blockbuster movies (the first movie I’ve seen in THX was The Mummy Returns, and I still can recall how the sound of clashing swords appear to be almost at the side of my ears) and talkies (especially those films with strong British accents). Although the price is a little steeper compared to ordinary cinemas (around 140 to 170 pesos, depending on the movie), it is still reasonable for me, considering the sound quality of the theater.

So far, there are only a few cinemas in the Philippines which are THX-certified (they get the certification from Skywalker Ranch in the US, the company built by Star Wars creator George Lucas). Here they are, for your reference:

Life is Beautiful

In the 1998 Oscar-winning film La Vita È Bella (Life Is Beautiful), principal protagonist Guido, an Italian Jew played by the film's director Roberto Benigni (who won a Best Actor Award for his remarkable and unforgettable performance) and his young son Giosue were arrested and taken to a concentration camp during the early years of the Second World War. As the horrors and realities of war slowly crept into the walls of the concentration camp, Guido protected his son by explaining to him that they are actually inside an elaborate game, and that in order to win Giosue must play along or he will be sent home. Giosue, innocent and perhaps convinced by the tales of Guido, played along and patiently waited for him to return after he was taken by the Nazi guards. Even up to the end, Giosue believed that the Holocaust was simply a game that he needed to win. The young boy even cheered when he saw a real tank in front of him after Italy was liberated by the Allied forces, thinking that it was his prize for staying alive. It was later that he realized that his father was no longer able to come home.

The simple message of the movie is very clear: children must be shielded from the harsh realities of our lives.

It is this message that best describes our reaction when we first heard the news about Mariannet Amper, a 12-year old girl from Davao City who committed suicide last All Souls’ Day because she had lost hope that her family would ever rise from poverty.

Although the thought of a child taking her own life disturbs our conscience, we find more disturbing the fact that for a 12-year old, she has already seen (and perhaps felt) despair and lack of hope—emotions which are unusual for a child to feel, considering her tender age.

There is only one thing that makes children the way they are—their innocence. By opening their eyes to the harshness of the society they are presently living in, we adults are virtually shattering our children’s innocence. And when we shatter their innocence, we adults are actually killing the child within them.

We adults are not in the position to control the negative things we see and feel every day. All that we are capable of doing is to veer away from such negativity and look at the more pleasant aspects of our lives. Children, however, are not capable of doing so. Unlike adults, children would accept as real everything they see. And it is what they see that makes up what they think is the kind of world they are living in.

Mariannet’s death should be a reminder to all of us that living in this world all depends upon attitude. Poverty, in whatever form and wherever it may be, is a reality. It is a part of our lives. We must think of ourselves as bearers of our own crosses. It all depends upon the one carrying it whether he will view his cross as lighter or heavier that the others. But one thing is for sure—every one has his own cross to bear.

Also, it is about time that we be reminded that there is more to our lives than hardships, bitterness and negativity. We must learn to appreciate the beautiful things in our lives, however simple or small they may be. Perhaps by reliving this simple yet almost forgotten virtue we adults may be able to pass it to our children, and they in turn would constantly remind us that life is, indeed, beautiful.

Bully Sheet

I was listening to Magic 89.9’s late night show Boys’ Night Out (Mondays to Fridays, 9pm to 12 mn) last November 6, and I was surprised to find out that the cool DJs (Slick Rick, Tony Tony, and Sam YG) were actually talking about bullies and bullying. One of them even shared how he was bullied during his high school days at the Ateneo.

When they asked the listeners to text or call in their bullying experiences, most of the responses actually named the persons who bullied them. What was more surprising was that there were some people who actually admitted to have bullied others.

One cool response was by the guy who went by the name Chubby Boy, who named the ones who bullied him in high school and even sent out a message for them: God bless them, wherever they are. (Trust me, I know who this guy is!)

Bullying is a serious topic. I believe that this issue should not be taken lightly. While some would say that bullying or bullies is just a phase or a period in someone’s life, I submit that it should not be considered as such.

What is “bullying?”

The online encyclopeadia Wikipedia defines bullying as “the act of intentionally causing harm to others through verbal harassment, physical assault, or other more subtle methods of coercion such as manipulation.”

The site further added that “in colloquial speech, bullying often describes a form of harassment perpetrated by an abuser who possesses more physical and/or social power and dominance than the victim. The victim of bullying is sometimes referred to as a target.”

Who is the Real Victim?

The way I see it, the real victim of bullying is not always the supposed “target,” but the bully himself/herself. There were studies which pointed to the fact that most of the bullies resorted to physical, verbal, or other forms of abuses because they suffered or is also suffering from the same treatment one way or the other.

Take for example my case. When I was in high school, this guy used to tease me and mimic my every move just for the heck of it. He even called me “buwan” (moon) because of my facial complexion. I endured such treatment for almost two years (we were classmates during my first and second year), only to find out that he was also being bullied by our senior schoolmates. There were also rumors that he came from a broken family.

I am in favor of subjecting the “targets” to emotional and psychological counseling, but I would suggest that the bullies themselves be subjected to the same treatment as well. Perhaps the bullies require counseling more than the targets do.

Bring Up The Topic

It was also noticed that the topic on bullying and bullies (not only in schools but also in the workplace) do not get the attention it requires. The targets would often decide to be quiet about the way bullies treat them. This should never be the case.

Guys, if anyone of you is a victim of bullying or knows anyone who is being bullied, kindly report the same to your/their teachers (in case it is in the school) or to your/their superiors (in case it is in the workplace). If you are the victim, reporting incidents of bullying is the least that you can do to stop it. In case you know someone who is a victim of bullying, reporting the same is the least that you can do to help them.

I commend the DJs of Boys’ Night Out for bringing up the topic (hey, who would have thought that a show which normally speaks about RSJ, LSF, and Sexy Time would discuss bullying?). To Slick Rick, Tony Tony and Sam YG, regards and hope to hear more serious topics from you soon. Apir!

Something Personal: A Belated Farewell

The news arrived at me unexpectedly. I was checking my Friendster account and was actually unaware that something has happened to you. The night before I learned about the news, Darrell and Leslie called me up during our Taxation Law Review lecture but I rejected the calls, thinking that they might just wish me good luck on my exams.

Apparently, I was wrong. They wanted to tell me the news personally so that I would not be surprised.

It did not take a long time for me to know that you already left us. How soon, I thought. I even thought that maybe this was just a joke. But as I stare at my Friendster account, I realized that two to three posts about announcing your passing away cannot be taken for granted.

I admit. My first reaction was not surprise, not even shock. My first reaction was regret. Regret not because of what happened, but regret on my part because I was not able to spend time with you more often.

Remember the last time we saw each other? It was actually I who saw you first. I agreed when you told me that I do not ride the LRT very often. I thought: perhaps it was God's idea that I ride the LRT so that I will be able to see you for the last time.

That experience was memorable to me. But more memorable were the last words you told me: "Pare, pag pumasa ka, magpapa-inom ka."

Now that you are gone, I can assure you that no matter what happens, I will forever treasure the good times we had and the friendship we established together with the rest of the PGC. Thank you for the brief yet meaningful time you spent with us.

We will never forget you, Ace. Farewell, brother. Till we meet again.

The Beginning of My So-Called Real Life

Hello guys! This is perhaps a very awkward time to say sorry for the overly-delayed posts in my blog. Perhaps there is also no more any reason to apologize considering the fact that my previous blog (Omarotti's Dictum) no longer exists.

We are trying to start from scratch, guys. Please bear with me.

I am still lost for words at the moment. The literary muse remains elusive for me.

Hopefully, as my so-called real life threads ahead, I would encounter her soon.
